Research within many aspects of public health, such as epidemiology and surveys of prevalence and risk factors for the major endemic diseases, studies of the economic aspects of healthcare, research on erroneous medical treatment and health policy.

The Department of Community Medicine has a total of 200 employees and is organized into seven research groups, four subject units for teaching and four competence centres.

The institute was established in 1973, and the institute''''s research activity has from the start until today had a clear focus on the risks and causes of the major public diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes and how these diseases are distributed in the population. A large part of the research activity stems from the population surveys Troms?survey, the Women and Cancer study and the SAMINOR study.
