School of Public Health

The School of Public Health, which is the only School of Public Health in a Greek university, was founded in 2019. It consists of the Department of Public and Community Health , which as an evolution of the Visiting Departments of Health and Public Hygiene has academic activity for more than 30 years . It also consists of the Department of Public Health Policy , which was established as the Catholic successor scheme of the National School of Public Health, which was founded as the Athens School of Health in 1929 by Eleftherios Venizelos.


In this historical journey, the School of Public Health has contributed to the protection of the health of our country''s population through the training of executives of Public Health Services and Primary Health Care at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, through research and through actions at local, regional and national level, but also through international collaborations, responding to the current challenges for the health of the population.


The scientific field of Public Health evolves alongside the evolution of health challenges, such as emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, chronic lifestyle-related diseases, but also challenges from contemporary social and economic phenomena including cross-border movements goods and populations. The interdisciplinary approach to these challenges is even more necessary to comprehensively address all dimensions: epidemiological documentation, policy impact, social acceptance, economic impact, impact on the health system.


In light of the above, the mission of the School of Public Health is:

The development of new knowledge to better understand the correlation of factors affecting population health highlighting both aggravating and protective factors.
Linking research to the implementation of effective evidence-based Public Health interventions.
The education of future Public Health leaders, who will have the scientific background and skills to evaluate, plan and implement policies, strategies and applied actions of Public Health and Primary Health Care.
Improving the health of the population and promoting equity in health and health care.
