Institute for Preventive Medicine and Public Health

The Institute of Preventive Medicine and Public Health (IMP&SP) is a structural unit of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon with the mission of supporting and developing undergraduate and postgraduate education, research and the provision of services to the community, both within the scope of health promotion and disease prevention.

The disciplines of Preventive Medicine, in their current configuration, result from a set of experiences started with Professor Ricardo Jorge, at the beginning of this century. Ricardo Jorge was, by invitation of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon, the first professor of the Hygiene chair, which resulted from an offshoot of the Legal Medicine and Hygiene chair.

With the Statutes of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, published in Diário da República, 2nd series of 03 April 2014, the University Clinic of General and Family Medicine was created as a structural unit of the FML ? based at the Instituto of Preventive Medicine ? and its renaming to the Institute of Preventive Medicine and Public Health.

This structural unit is organized into Thematic Units, with a view to developing activities that prefigure the Institute''''s general mission.

In this sense, the main areas of activity of the IMP&SP, throughout 2018, were teaching (21 Disciplinary Areas in Pre-Graduation), the Master in Epidemiology and the Doctoral Program in Environmental Health), research and the provision of services university extension.
